    What does mainstream Christianity believe about Asherah? I’ve read a few articles by LDS scholars about the Asherah (including Bro. Barney’s latest), but I have yet to come across anything that would indicate a generalized belief in mainstream Christianity of this seemingly pro-LDS topic.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Jeremy.

    Like the vast majority of LDS, the vast majority of mainstream Christians are completely oblivious to the issue.

    As for those who are up to speed, most mainstream Christians don’t think there is much to get excited about. They have a different interpretation of events. We all agree that ancient Israelite religion evolved from a more henotheistic emphasis to a more monotheistic emphasis. We just disagree about whether this was a good thing or a bad thing.

    As for me, I believe that Asherah was borrowed by Israel from the Canaanites, and that the prophets reluctantly tolerated her presence for the most part. These prophets may have recognized the truth behind what the represented. Remember, they opposed the worship of Asherah, not the existence of Asherah.

    Their image is “male and female” (us and our, not me and mine)
    Genesis 1:26 – 27
    26 And God said, Let us make man(kind) in our image, after our likeness: … male and female created he them.

    Some people were allowed to worship in groves of trees…
    Genesis 21:33 And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.

    Proverbs 2:
    1 MY son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
    2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
    3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;

    4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

    Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
    14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
    15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
    16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
    17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
    18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
    19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

    18 She is a tree of life …

    Genesis 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
