Who Really Discovered America?

I haven’t watched this whole thing, and I can’t vouch for all the science discussed here, but for some reason this History Channel special seems relevant to Mormon apologetics:

I’ve seen this before and can say they don’t cover much on the BoM. Disappointingly Dr. Delgado attempts to shoot down the idea of Lehi’s trans-oceanic voyage by assuming they didn’t stop along the way and thus could not have survived the estimated 580 day voyage. You can view the blurb starting at 0:56. From there they segue into Cherokee DNA tests, which is only relevant to the BoM for those who subscribe to a North American setting for the book. No other mention of ties to Mesoamerican peoples or cultures.

Right. I watched it last night, and saw that portion. They don’t really discuss the Book of Mormon in any depth, though, and so I’d just ignore the passing comments they make about it. I think this video is worth watching for the general point which is made, that trans-oceanic voyages occurred well before Columbus.

I find it interesting that they estimate that travel from China to California is 270 days (in 455 AD). Suddenly the 344 days for the Jaredites doesn’t seem as ridiculous as anti-Mormons make it out to be.

Just a heads-up that the video has been taken off of YouTube. -Jaxon
